What Photos Should I Hang on the Wall: Photo Wall Ideas
One of the biggest fear some of my families have when it comes to choosing their photography for their home is not what images look nice but rather the type and style of wall art to hang in their homes. This article will provide some information on photo wall ideas for your home.
They are afraid that if they chose the wrong design that it will look out of place hanging on the wall in the wall.
Concerns like is it going to be too big, should I get canvases or acrylics to display my photographs or should the photographs be mounted and framed, are all questions that need to be answered when it comes to choosing your art work for your home.
It can be stressful if you leave these decisions to after your photography session, when you are picking your favourite images. A better way to do it is to have a very clear idea very early on of what you want and how it will look in your home.
A Case Study
Recently a client of mine found herself battling these very questions. They had booked a newborn photography session with us and when I asked her what she wanted to do with the images. She said that although she wanted items for her wall she had no idea where to hang them or what to choose.
She told me they had three walls at home that she had in mind for her portraits but was confused with what size, style, format and colours to choose.
We offer a complimentary design service so that families know what the end result may look like before their photography session. I told her to walk through her home and photograph the walls that she thought would be suitable for her photographs. It didn’t have to be fancy just a quick phone image would suffice.
Once she sent through her images, I then took them and using our design software created mock up examples of what certain products we have might look like hanging in her home. I gave the images back to her with multiple design options for every room. The image galleries were to scale so now she could see what they looked like over her couch, dining table etc.
Examples of photograph displays in my clients home created from her photos!
Being a very visual person, this was a godsend to her. Having these photo wall ideas, she was now very confident on what sizes and styles would suit her home. This was all done before a single photograph was even taken.
I love doing this for the families we work with because it really can take the stress away from their photography session and they can then just relax and enjoy their time being photographed.
Tips on Choosing Artwork and Hanging Photographs in Your Home
Here are a few photo wall ideas and tips on what to consider before choosing your artwork and photographs for your home:
- The type of furniture you have can decide what choices you make. Is your furniture contemporary or more classic looking? Sometimes a home with more classic furniture suits canvases. Photographs printed on canvas really can work in every home. Sometimes it may depend on a persons preference. The acrylic photographs that we create are very slick and stylish. They really stand out on any wall and they are only 6mm thick.
You can see examples of the canvases and acrylics we provide on our Products page.
- Choosing the correct size is also an important consideration. A good starting point is to ask yourself what is the size of the piece of furniture you want to hang it above? Once you know that, a good rule of thumb is to multiply that number by 0.6. In other words the artwork should be 60% the size of the piece of furniture it is hanging above. (Note: the image below says multiply by 0.57. Let’s not get too picky 0.6 is fine).
A bigger problem here is choosing something too small. An 8×10 inch framed photo may look big in your hands but hang it up over a coffee table on its own and it will look really out of place.
- What colour scheme do you have throughout the rooms you want to hang the artwork in? This could dictate the clothing colour you wear on the day of your photo session. Of course if you’re going with black and white images this doesn’t really matter. It can also help with the frame colour you choose.
So there you have it, some of my thoughts on choosing artwork for the walls of your home. Hopefully these photo wall ideas will help you make an informed decision when it comes to choosing photo art for your wall. The number one take away is to have a clear idea of what your desire beforehand. Don’t leave that decision until the day of choosing your images because it does take away from the joy of viewing your final images that we create for you. Once you know what you want it makes choosing the appropriate images to display so much easier.
Next week I will be talking about the actual process of picking your favourite images and how to make the right decisions.
