Come on please show us the photo! Just give me a quick peak!
Showing the back of the camera to my subjects that I am photographing is not something I normally do. It tends to break the flow of the session and can be an unwanted distraction. Sometimes however when the image is really good I bend the rules. As was the case with Sarah during her family portrait session.
After seeing some of these preview images, Sarah was now extremely excited to see all the finished images from her family photography session. We usually present the images a week after the photography session and project it up on a big screen accompanied with music.
This is the time when clients get really excited because they can finally see the results of all their effort. This article talks about photo display ideas and how to go about choosing the best and more importantly the most appropriate photographs for your home.
Photo Display Ideas – Create Awesome Displays for Your Home
The first part of this series talked about the importance of knowing what you want to do with your final photographs. In other words what products would suit your home and tips on how to choose them. You can read that here: Family Photo Wall Ideas and Tips for your Home
A key benefit in knowing what you want beforehand is that when you arrive at your viewing session it makes the job of choosing your final images so much easier. Depending on the type of photography session you had you will view between 30 to 40 images. The best of the best. For many clients it can get a bit overwhelming to narrow that many down.
That’s where I can help. My job as an image expert is to guide you through the selection process so you can be confident that your final photographs suit your personality and the products you’ve decided when displayed in your home.
Having me there with you is one of the biggest advantages of the whole process. Compare this to other studios that put all your images online and ask you to go through them with no guidance. You need personal guidance when choosing your best images. Not an online gallery and a prayer. Share on X
Tips on Choosing the Best Images for Your Photo Display Ideas
Having done this many times with families of different personalities, I have listed a few tips and photo display ideas to help you through the selection process.
- Do the chosen images tell a story?
It can be easy to fall into the trap of picking JUST your favourite images. This may sound weird at first. After all isn’t that what you are supposed to do? Well yes and in most instances this is fine however if you are purchasing a wall collection it is important that the series of images you choose tells a story or has some connection with each other. Having random images tightly grouped next to one another can end up looking like a mishmash.
- Choose images with matching tones.
One big no no is to mix black and white photographs and colour photographs together in the same series of images. It just doesn’t work. To a lesser degree this can extend to images photographed on different backdrops. For instances you would not group bright images that have been photographed on a light or white background with moodier images photographed on a dark or black background.
Remember we want consistency and to tell a story.
- Choose images that have the same feel.
This is similar to the point above. Are the mood of the images and how they make you feel different from one another? For example you would not necessarily pair a happy playful image with a soulful reflective photograph like the ones we create with our relationship portraits.
There is no hard rule here. It may work depending on the individual but it is something that you should be aware of.
- When choosing a series of images, consider grouping your children in separate image collections.
That way each collection can be displayed in their own room. Group the family photographs separately and display them in general living areas.
- Choose expression over artistic flair.
As an artist I love the creative aspects of your images – how the light falls on your daughters hair and the elegant poses that she makes. You on the other hand have to decide based on how the image makes you feel. Sure lighting and posing influences this but more importantly what is the expression on her face or what gesture is she making? How does it make you feel?
Hopefully these photo display ideas will help you make an informed decision when it comes to choosing photographs for the products you desire. Either way I am there to guide you through the whole process so you can be rest assured that the final photo art pieces will be relevant to your family’s personality and taste.
At the end of it all you will have beautiful photographs that can be displayed proudly in your home. The memories that they make will last a lifetime and your kids will thank you for it. Trust me!
