If I was to photograph my relationship with my 1 year old daughter, Aria, right now, I would first start off by asking myself what are the top 5 things that I love so much about her? What do we share that’s precious? What do I want to look back on in 15 or 20 years from now and say to myself, “Oh my god. I remember when we use to do that together.”
You can read my list below.
Relationship Portraits
At our studio, we have a style of photography that we call Relationship Portraits. You can see a gallery of those images here: relationship portraits
These images are unique in that their sole aim is to capture beautiful moments between family members, but with a twist. You see, these same moments have already been described to us by the families well before they come in for their photography session.
How do we know what to photograph? Well, we ask you questions and we listen (yes listen) to your story. The end result is photographs that are significant to you because they are filled with your personal feelings and emotions. It’s your story.
You may notice that all the images are black and white. I’ve chosen to do that on purpose because it adds to the timeless and sensitive nature of the photographs.
Make Your Own List Of Things You Love About Your Kids
So getting back to my top 5 things I love about Aria, here is what I cam up with:
* The way she smiles and giggles at me when I’m acting silly
* How she kisses me by grabbing my face, pulling it towards her, opening her mouth on my cheek while saying, “Yum”
* How she reaches out to touch my face
* When I read bedtime stories to her, she listens so intently and then points to all the small animals on each page while saying, “Babeee”
* How when she wants to be flipped upside down she buries her head into my tummy while I’m lying down, stands on her tippee toes and yells “Weeee!!”
Now it’s your turn. Go ahead make your own similar list. If your children aren’t as young as my little one, your list will look a lot different. It doesn’t matter. It is a good opportunity to reflect on the relationship that you guys share.
Can’t think of all five? Well try this. Close your eyes, imagine you are at work, your day has been long and you are missing your kids dearly. Think about what is it that they do when you are together that makes you smile? Something that you can’t wait to do with them as soon as you walk through your front door tonight when you get home. Cuddles, tickles, sing songs or cook together….? it’s your list…create it.
The list I created is pretty constant….for now. BUT I can think of countless other things that she did that were so damn cute but for some reason, she grew out of or was temporary or just a “phase”.
Imagine how powerful it would be if you could capture, FOREVER, in a photograph, all the things you put down on your list.
There is nothing more satisfying than doing this very thing for my clients. Relationship portrait photo sessions are not about technique, equipment or lighting. Yes, these things matter and if done well they take your portraits to another level. But they are much more than that.
Family Relationship Portraits That Are Right For You
Our studio’s relationship portrait sessions are popular because the aim is to recreate the moments that are precious to you. The moments you have already told us in the list you created. The portrait session is not a cookie cutter approach, but we tailor it for your family.
Before we photograph your family we discuss what these special moments are and how we can recreate them for you. That might include what to wear or what props to bring in with you.
The photographs we create with you will naturally mean so much more to you and will forever be works of art you will cherish, either on your walls at home or as a designer album.
They will be lifelong memories and a vehicle that transports all the feelings of love and connection you have for your children right now to another time and place when your whole family is older and everyone’s lives and circumstances have changed.
So have I convinced you yet about how important this is to your family?
These days photography is so immediate and consumed so quickly that we fail to see it as an investment into something a whole lot greater.
No matter how old your kids are, there will always be something they do that is worth savouring forever.
If you’ve never had a professional family portrait done, consider these relationship portraits as a perfect opportunity
