What’s so scary about having your own photography exhibition?

A Photography Exhibition of My Very Own

One of my goals that I would like to achieve with my photography is to have a photography exhibition of my work. To me it is a scary prospect. First of all the body of work you exhibit has to be damn good. Also I am of the belief that it has to have a theme and not just a lot of random photos put together. Add to these difficulties the time involved in finding a suitable venue that will accept you, planning, organising, printing….and then after all that what happens if no one shows up on opening night!!!!

Photography exhibition

A major hurdle in my quest to have my own photography exhibition is was what to exhibit.

The driving force behind doing this is not to sell art work or get recognition but just simply to be able to say I did it and be proud of what I achieved. A lot of my fellow photography friends have dipped their toe in the water and tried, some are even doing it on a regular basis. This has given me the confidence to challenge myself and begin working on a photography exhibition project. I am not sure how long it will take me to get enough work together which I am happy with. At least 12 months maybe more but the exciting thing is that I’ve made a commitment to start.

What’s that I hear you say? What will be the theme of the photography exhibition? Oh YES the theme, one of the major hurdles I needed to deal with. Well, I do have a theme or more accurately a concept that I am now working on. I can’t tell you of course because that will ruin the surprise.

I recently wrote an article about how amazing the human mind is when it comes to finding solutions to problems from the strangest of places. It was titled ‘Where Do You Get Your Inspiration From‘. So much of staying creative, developing ideas and finding inspiration has to do with engaging the brain in things unrelated to your work or your normal routine. I am sure I am not the only one who has discovered that the simple act of removing yourself from a certain situation can really help you to break through mental blocks that you might be grappling with. Again, you can read the article on inspiration here.

I had, for many years, been struggling with the issue of what to exhibit if I was to have my own show, when one day out of the blue it came to me. At the time I had not thought about the photography exhibition for several months. My inspiration came from a simple statement my partner made to me. We were preparing for a photo shoot for one of her nephews and while we were going through an assortment of props, she said something to me that was so run-of-the-mill but I swear I could instantly feel the cogs in my brain starting to move. These cogs and their mechanisms still need a lot of oiling for this project to come to fruition. I will need to do a lot of story boarding, prop sourcing and model searching. On that note you may hear me occasionally sending call outs for suitable models over the next coming months. So it would be great if you can help me out with that. The project will involve photographing kids in our studio but that’s all I’m saying. 🙂

I’ll keep you updated with how I’m going and I will post some behind the scenes images on Facebook.

Wish me luck.

Take care
Warren

PS: Oh yes, you better all be there on opening night 🙂
