To celebrate the start of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival I thought it would be a great time to share some of my commercial food photography images. As you well know my passion is photographing people. I love capturing those special moments and using imagery to tell a story. However I do have a soft spot for still life photography in particular food photography.
Food Photography
Why? Well I guess it is the geek in me. I really enjoy spending time getting the lighting just right. When it comes to food photography there are so many components that go into creating a successful image. But lighting is critical as it can make or break an image. Sure lighting is a factor in all aspects of photography but there are times when it is not as important. For instance I would gladly accept an image of someone with a great expression or one that tells a powerful story over perfect lighting any day! Unfortunately a bowl of noodles can’t smile back at you so lighting is critical to give the viewer that YUMMY factor.
The other reason why I enjoy photographing food is that I get to work with some really creative people aka The Stylists. The images used in this article were styled by the very talented Kirsty Bryson. It’s a wonderful collaborative effort which covers prepping the food, getting the light right, adding props and fine tuning composition. A single image can take up to an hour to capture and that does not even include the cooking!
I do hope you enjoy the images just as much as I enjoyed eating the food afterwards!!
All the best.
