On the weekend I had the pleasure of heading over to ProK9’s dog obedience training facility in Lyndhurst. Owner, Judi Buchan, invited me to come down and photograph her clients training and having fun with their dogs. The dog obedience training grounds are located within the premises of All Breeds Boarding Kennels in Lyndhurst. A large securely fenced off paddock provides a great facility to train your dog.
Frequent readers of this blog may remember Judi from the interview I did with her just before Christmas on the topic of choosing a puppy. She truly is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to our furry companions and throughout the interview provided some excellent advice to listeners who were considering purchasing a dog as their first family pet.
The Benefits of Dog Obedience Training
It has been many years since I last stepped out onto a dog obedience training field. Back then it was in the capacity of a dog trainer, so I was really excited to witness the pleasure of the owner/dog relationship once again. Judi had her clients working their dogs with energy and enthusiasm. It is so important when doing dog obedience training to have your energy levels up so that the dog doesn’t get bored and come to dislike training.
Training does not limit a dog, training frees a dog. Share on XIt was fantastic to see so many dedicated dog owners who have come to realise the importance a well mannered dog can make to family life and a harmonious household. I love this quote by Sue Ailsby (I think it is her quote but I stand to be corrected)…
“Training does not limit a dog, training frees a dog. My dog is not limited because he does what I tell him. He is free: Free to ride with me, free to walk with me, free to meet people, free to run off lead in the park, free to play with other dogs. The untrained dog is ‘free’ to sit in the backyard all by itself.”

The reason why I love this quote so much is that it gives an insight into all the potential possibilities that owning a dog can bring. Dog obedience training unleashes (excuse the pun) this potential allowing your pooch to fit right into your family’s lifestyle. I forget the number of times people have told me in the past how they dread the simple task of walking their dog because they constantly pull. Where is the joy in that?
Well done to all the dog owners at ProK9…keep up the good work.
ProK9 is located in Lyndhurst and classes are run on Sunday mornings. For more information head over to their website. If you are looking for a dog obedience training facility that is more local then try searching online. If you are unsure of where to take your dog then I am happy to give advice, just give me a call at our studio on 9570 6191.
I would love to hear whether your dog has had some form of dog obedience training and if so how this has helped you with family life. Please leave your comments below. AND for a little bit of fun, not that we are condoning bad behaviour (Judi Buchan don’t read further), why not also tell us the naughtiest thing your dog has ever done.
All the best
