Pet Photography – Cavoodling Cavoodles

After photographing Molly the Cavoodle a few months ago, Millie one of her besties from down the street, saw the images we took hanging on Molly’s mum’s wall. Well not to be outdone, Millie (another Cavoodle by the way), barked orders to her mum that she wanted the same. Well one thing led to another and Davina, Millie’s mum, gave me a call saying that they needed photos too. Davina also wanted her other children, Kyle and Brooke, to be in on the fun. After all Millie was a huge part in all of their lives.

Millie’s pet photography shoot had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances and the next time I spoke to Davina she had some exciting news……they were getting another puppy…..and wait for it, another Cavoodle. So I insisted that their pet photography session should not go ahead until the new puppy was at home and had settled in.

Weeks later I was sitting in a local coffee shop and noticed this young woman approach another group in the shop. Lying next to the group was a Cavoodle. The woman was so excited to see the dog and mentioned that she was longing to get a Cavoodle too! She was very keen to get information about the dog’s personality and it’s breeder. This got me wondering, so how popular are Cavoodles?? After doing a bit of research I discovered that the Cavoodle is Australia’s most popular small designer breed due to their gentle nature and temperament.

This was definitely true of both Millie and the new puppy, Lexie, when I met them on the day of the shoot. Both dogs were very confident and not too fussed about all the strange activity going on around them. You can see that they really enjoy each others company and that Millie doesn’t mind sharing the attention. Davina and the rest of the family have done a great job with introducing Lexie to the household, which in some instances can be a little difficult when you already have an older dog.

One image image that really stands out for me from their pet photography session is the one below. It highlights both the playful nature of Lexie the puppy and the more serious ‘mother figure’ of Millie. It was something that I wanted to try and capture to show off their personalities.

As always I like to ask dog owners to share a little about the relationships their family has with their four legged companions. This is what Davina had to say about Millie and Lexie:

How old was they when you got them?

Both Millie and Lexie were 12 weeks old when we brought them home. Our cute bundles of fluff.

How did you come up with their names?

I have always liked the name Millie. It reminded me of a cute rag doll I had and when I saw our new puppy with those long floppy ears and those big eyes the name just suited. Lexie on the other hand was a cheeky playful pup full of mischief her name was a bit harder to come up with.

Any specific circumstances on how/why you got them?

We decided to get Millie after having to give back a guide dog puppy that we had been training. We were all so upset when Elyssia left and didn’t realize until then how much we missed having a dog around. One puppy turned into two, as we just fell in love with the Cavoodle breed and decided Millie needed a friend.

What is their character like?

We are amazed at how loving and devoted these dogs are to their owners. They are so placid and just love being around people. They are fast learners and are very quick and eager to learn. Energetic but also happy to sit and be with you. They are very much apart of our family now.

Funniest things they has ever done?

Lexie is our puppy with spunk and makes us laugh each time she greets our rag doll cat. She gets so excited to see Bella, she skids along the tiles, forgetting to stop jumps on and flattens her, much to the cats protest. The cat has become very tolerant of this now and just gives her a swipe of the paw and off she goes. Lexie is not deterred by this and always goes back for more.

Both dogs do this crazy little spin when they realize they are about to be fed, not sure where that has come from, but funny to see.

When do they make you smile/laugh?

These dogs are a joy to come home to and will always put a smile on your face. Even after a bad day at work, they are just so excited to see you, you cant help but smile at them, they act as if they haven’t seen you for years and sometimes you might have only been gone for an hour.

When do they make you angry?

I couldn’t be angry at my girls even if I tried. They can be frustrating at times with the continual chewing of things they shouldn’t be or running off with stuff they shouldn’t have and the continual scratching at the back door, to say “Let me in, why are we out here!” I think they forget their dogs sometimes.

Favourite things you like doing with them?

On a weekend we always try and take them out for breakfast somewhere to socialize them and get them used to the car, they just love it.

How were they when they first met each other?

We were initially worried about having two dogs as we had only ever had one and were not sure if they would ignore us to play with one another. Millie was very quiet the first week, probably thinking why is “she here” but motherly instincts very quickly kicked in and the two are inseparable, the bond is amazing, always having to be touching one another when asleep, sharing or fighting over the same toy, looking for each other to see what the other is doing, even when I’m grooming one of them the other is sitting there watching. We have no regrets with this decision they are great mates and have a ball together tearing around the backyard in their silly times.
