A Boxer and a British Bulldog – Pet Photography Melbourne

One of the first things I ask my clients when they book a pet photography session is the reasons behind why they chose their dog or why they chose that particular breed of dog. Sometimes the answer is that they were just so cute we just had to get him/she. However more often than not it is based on a certain affinity for a particular breed that many people have.

When asked for advice about what dog breed someone should get, I always say that it is best to match the dog to your personality and lifestyle. Things like are you an active person etc. Of course other considerations like how big is your yard and do you have young children are of importance but in this instance I’m talking along the lines of making that mental connection.

Let me tell you about Di. She is a dedicated dog person and in her own words, “Can’t imagine my life without a dog as just their mere existence make my whole life better.” Di has owned Boxers most of her life. I absolutely love Boxers. They are so lively and energetic. Their well toned physiques and upright stance give them that a strong appearance. If you’ve ever owned a Boxer however you would know that their bouncy nature makes them an eternal puppy and training and obedience is a must.

Di is dedicated to her dogs and is doing all the right things with her current Boxer, Red Roo, and now a British Bulldog by the name of Wombat (great names by the way!). Both are doing obedience training and Di has a good handle on managing both their strong wills.

I had a ball taking images of these two colourful characters. Di loved the images and I hope you do too.

We were aiming for some photos that would really portray their playful nature and as they had done some trick training, Di used some of these techniques so that I could get some of the following images during their pet photography session.

Di went into fits when I showed her the following image of Wombat giving a massive Yawn. It was something she had never seen before and didn’t even realise that I had taken the photo. Priceless.

The three of them share a very special bond so it wasn’t that hard to photograph very emotive images that Di will treasure forever.

Thanks Di for giving me the opportunity of photographing your babies.

Have a read below to learn about the wonderful bond the three of them share. Take it away Di:

How old were they when you got them?

Red Roo was a returned (Lucky me 🙂 ) to the breeder pup so he was 18 weeks old when he melted my heart.
Wombat was 8 weeks old when I got him one week later! Crazy huh?

How did you come up with their names?

Well!…. Without stating the obvious I think it is obvious when you see them! One looks like a Red Roo and one looks like a Wombat, can you pick which is which?

Any specific circumstances on how/why you got them?

Once you have had a boxer it is very hard not to have another, they just get that deep into your heart. They are a great dog and wonderful family pet/member. Red Roo is my fifth boxer (well 4th and a 1/2th, my 2nd was a cross Boxer/British Bulldog).

When my last boxer, a white one, passed at 13 years and 4 months I was determined to get a British Bulldog as I always had wanted one…..but…….how could I not have a Boxer? So……I just had to have both.

When I went to pick up Red Roo he was the first dog to the window and he jumped on the window sill looked me straight in the eyes with a ‘Mum you’ve come to get me’ look in his eyes and he has been my shadow since.

Wombat came from a wonderful breeder with Show Champions on both sides and he also won Best in Breed when I showed him.

What are their characters like?

They’re a Laurel and Hardy comedy couple a constant source of amusement! Red Roo is my golden child, always my shadow, willing to please, compliant, intelligent, loving, funny, loves a snuggle. Will try to do extra tricks during training hoping to get more attention or treats. A very special and adorable dog.

Wombat is my problem child! Thinks his good looks will get him everywhere and out of trouble. He loves (as Red Roo also does) socialising…. it’s all about him, knows his commands and tricks but pretends that they are directed at Red Roo and doesn’t do them unless you use his name! Conceited? I think maybe. Both are very loving, calm and gentle dogs with great temperaments.

Funniest thing they have ever done?

Red Roo during training, throwing himself down in to ‘play dead’ position and doing a ‘dead ant’ wiggle trying to get attention. Then later when it was his turn to do the agility course, which he loves, (absolutely obsessed by tunnels) ran through the course beautifully, on his second run through decided to deviate off course and through the training soft cloth tunnels as well regardless of the fact that another dogs occupied them. Hilarious, the whole class laughed at him.

Wombat is just funny to look at! He sleeps on his back, back legs splayed totally exposing himself with one front arm rigid in the air and snoring. It’s very funny when he rolls over on the bed and falls off and tries to roll back on to his front when on his back, highly amusing to watch the rolly poly happening. The black face after trying to dig a tunnel to China was funny. (The digging in the garden…Not so funny)

When do they make you smile/laugh?

Just about all the time. Especially when they cuddle up sleeping together after a fun day out or when they cuddle up to me.

When do they make you angry?

Annoyed rather then angry and sometimes a tad frustrated when they pull too much on the lead and when there is excessive pruning and excavation going on unsupervised in the garden!

Favorite thing you like doing with them?

Snuggling, cuddling, hugging, training, walking, water play, socialising, trips away…..Just Being with Them…..LOVE THEM TO BITS 🙂
