Rescue Dogs
The Victorian Dog Rescue and Resource Group (VicDRG) is a not for profit organisation whose purpose is to decrease the number of dogs killed in Victorian pounds each year by running a rehoming service for abandoned dogs. These rescue dogs desperately need a home from loving families across Melbourne.
A few months ago we donated a voucher for a photo session to their Puzzle4Pooches-Scrabble Night charity event. The night was a huge success and Tracey the lucky winner of the voucher has already had her pooch’s photo session with us. I am looking forward to sharing those images with you shortly.
Since then I signed up with VicDRG as a volunteer, to offer my photography services to rescue dogs so that they may have a better chance of being rehomed. It is very important that the images be of good quality while at the same time portray the dog’s character so that potential new owners can share a connection with the dog. The process is not that different to the many corporate head shots I have photographed for people looking for a new homes (jobs). Ahem, not sure if I’m going to get in to trouble for comparing corporate head shots with dog head shots. Oh well!! 🙂
Last weekend I photographed Kiana, one of VicDRG’s newest rescue dogs looking for a home. Sam Fennell from VicDRG was kind enough to bring her to the studio and we had a heap of fun getting her to do all sorts of things. She is definitely a character. Kiana really enjoys the high pitch of a squeaky toy as well as movement.
She is very intelligent and knows a few basic commands but with some consistent training I can definitely see her being a loving member of some lucky family. She loves to be massaged. It was so funny watching her transform from a highly alert state to one where she was almost in a trance with her eyes rolling to the back of her head just by simply massaging her back.
If you are thinking of getting a new puppy or an older dog I would definitely encourage you to have a listen to an interview I did with Judi Buchan from ProK9. Judi provides valuable tips as well as what you need to consider before buying a new dog. You can listen to the interview on tips on choosing a puppy here.
In the interview Judi also mentions VicDRG as an option when the time is right to get a new dog. It is a great way to help out rescue dogs that are in desperate need of a new home. Their website is Victorian Dog Rescue and Facebook page.
I hope these images help Kiana find a new home and lead other people to consider all the benefits of adopting a rescue dog. Have you adopted rescue dogs? If so please let us know of your experiences in the comments below.

Victorian Dog Rescue and Resource Group Inc (VicDRG) is a not for profit organisation whose purpose is to decrease the number of dogs killed in Victorian pounds each year. Nearly all these dogs could be rehomed and end up in pounds and shelters through no fault of their own. Their misfortune in many cases is they have not been valued by their family and they have not had returned to them the love and loyalty they have given.
