Simple Tips for Taking Better Photographs of Your Children

What’s the one thing you can do right now to start to improve the photos you take of your kids?

Parents are always asking me for tips on how to take better photos of their kids. They tell me that their photos are either too dark, too blurry or are out of focus.

After chatting with them for a little bit, I find out that most of them think that the problem lies with their camera. They tell me “if only I had a decent camera my photos would be so much better.” Does this sound familiar?

Well, don’t buy into all the hype and marketing you hear about the latest cameras out there. You don’t need an expensive camera to take great photos of your kids. All that technical jargon is meant to impress you and for the most part it’s all marketing.

Sure a good dedicated camera is nice but you can take fantastic photos with just your phone and nowadays even the cheapest cameras can take great photos.

It all comes down to how you use the camera that you already have.

I recently did a Facebook Live on our Facebook Page (don’t forget to LIKE it for more good stuff like this) about the one thing you can do right now to start to improve the photos you take of your kids?

You can either watch that video below or continue reading to find out more.

This one tip is part of a 7 tip guide I created on the topic. It’s really short and not technical at all. If you would like to download it please enter your details below.

Change Your Point of View

If you start to implement this one tip into your photography you will see your images of your kids improve dramatically.

The tip is – change your Point Of View.

We tend to always photograph our kids (or pets for that matter) from our natural standing position. After a while these photos all start to look the same – top of your child’s head. Not only that but photos taken from high above your subject, make your subject “feel” less significant. Almost like we are “looking down on them”

The solution to this problem is to get down to your child’s level. Now you will have more engaging photos. You can see your child’s face, you’ll see whatever they are doing and you will naturally elevate their perceived importance in the photo.

Make Your Child Look Important

Another thing you can do is to get down even lower – lie on your belly and point your camera upwards at them. From this position, they are towering over you so there is no question how dominant they will appear in your photo. Sometimes we want to portray our child’s strong personality and this is a good way to do that.

Not many photographs are taken from this angle so yours will be unique and stand out.

Change Your Perspective and Try Some Creative Points of View

Creative Framing

Photograph your children through objects and structures you find in their environment. Once again your images will stand out because it is different and creates a lot of interest when you put a natural frame around them.

Use Empty Space

Don’t photograph your children by always placing them smack bang in the middle of your photo it gets boring. Try placing them to one side and giving the room.

Photograph From Their Point Of View

Photograph their activities from over their shoulder.  You get a unique perspective of their world.

Summary

So the next time you are taking photos of your kids, think about your point of view and perspective and how you can make your photographs more interesting by just doing something simple like changing your position or angle.

I love answering questions like these so if you have any questions feel free to ask away in the comments below.
