Maternity Photography

There is something beautiful about combining the simplicity of black and white with maternity photography. Depending on the image, I think black and white tends to simplify the image. In the case of maternity photography the focus is clearly placed on the curves of the belly and the connection that the expecting mums have with their unborn child.

Below is a selection of images from a recent maternity session with Ramona and Thomas. It is their first child and they are both super excited to be parents. It was hard to wipe the smile of Ramona’s face and Thomas was very keen to be involved in the maternity photography session. Sometimes this is not the case with male partners but when they do take part the final results are so worth it and guys, your partner will also appreciate it.

I hope you enjoy the selection of images from their maternity photography session.

Keep reading though because I have included a few thoughts about what a maternity photography session should entail and what you should expect.

Maternity Photography – Some Considerations

A lot of expecting mums hold off from getting a professional maternity photography session and prefer to wait until their baby is born before documenting their experience. This can be a mistake. After all pregnancy is a major life event and not only that, it is such a beautiful thing therefore recording your time being pregnant is pretty significant.

Just look how happy Ramona is and how much she ‘glows’ in the images below. This is something  you definitely want to be remembering.

If you are after maternity photography then there are several styles or ways you can try. I’ve spoken about the importance of documenting your journey of your pregnancy in a more recent article called “Storytelling with Maternity Photos”. Basically it talks about taking photos over the course of your pregnancy. Not just your belly but your life, changes to your home, relationships with the kids and your partner. These all can be recorded with images – have your partner take them for you.

Another way is to keep a written diary, with your thoughts and stick some of your own photos in there too!

I believe it is important to document your journey yourself even if you are considering having a professional photographer do a maternity photography session for you.

Depending on what you like, a maternity photography session can be done outdoors. This is loosely classed as lifestyle photography. We do all our maternity photography sessions in a studio. The aim being to provide beautiful fine art portraits that you will treasure for a lifetime. The best time to do a paid maternity photography session is sometime after 7 months. By this stage your belly is an amazing shape.

Another reason why women hold off on getting maternity photography done is because they believe that they will not do anything with the photographs. They don’t want large pieces of art on their walls at home because there may in some instances be a lot of ‘skin’ showing which might be confronting for your guests.

I totally understand this but for the record I know a lot of families who are very comfortable having these images front and center in their home.

One suggestion might be to display the artwork that you feel has an acceptable level of garment coverage and then also create a beautifully designed private album for just you and your partner with the other images from your session.

These are just some of my thoughts on maternity photography. What is your opinion? Let me know in the comments below.

If you are pregnant and considering a maternity photography session then please call the studio on 9570 6191 or contact us via email.

Take care
