I recently received an interesting phone enquiry for a family photography session. Now there is nothing unusual about that but the dad asked me whether we could photograph the session that afternoon. Mind you he called around 2 p.m.
I asked him whether it was critical for him to have his family photographed that day. I thought that maybe he had a family member leaving for overseas or something else along those lines.
He said that there was no urgency, he just wanted to have the photos done that day. I had to explain to him the complete process we go through for each family we photograph that ensures that their experience with us is a unique and memorable one. I told him that it would be a big disservice to him and his family if I didn’t go through this whole process with him.
He told me that he didn’t realise how involved the it was and how personalised the service can be.
There are plenty of other photographers whose business is based on high traffic and low contact time with their clients. Fortunately, we are not one of those businesses.
The Discovery Call
So what is the process I described to him?
Well, after you book a session with us we schedule a follow up phone call with you – preferably with both Mum and Dad.
We call this a Discovery Call. We use this time to learn more about your family. Things like your dynamics, your likes and dislikes, what your children are like and what qualities they have that you adore. These conversations can lead down various paths but the end goal is to tie it all together with a family photography sessions that is tailored just for you.
This results in more meaningful photographs that you have a deeper connection with.
There is an added benefit of having portraits that you connect with more. It is a benefit that is rarely discussed and it has to do with psychology and how the photographs make you feel emotionally.
I will talk about this in another article, “Discover The Psychology Behind Your Favourite Photographs”
If you would like your family photographs to truly reflect what your family is like now and a service that does not follow a cookie-cutter approach, then I’ll be more than happy to chat to you about it.

Until next time.
Take care.
