To Photoshop Or Not To Photoshop?

– Diary of a Photographer –

I recently had a debate with a friend of mine about whether photographers should use Photoshop. My argument was Hell YES!

Now my friend is not a photographer.

Here is my argument:

Photographers are artists and their cameras are only tools. Usually, you take a photograph because you enjoy how the scene in front of you makes you feel. Cameras are incapable of capturing that feeling.

Have you ever taken a photograph of am awesome sunset at the beach? The clouds had amazing formations, the colours were beautiful and the reflection on the water was to die for. At the time you were so happy to be alive.

When you look at that image on your computer at home it looks dull. You can’t feel any of the same emotions you felt at the time of taking the image.

Like I said, the camera is only a tool. It struggles to reproduce exact colours or details in bright and dark areas. It’s like having your favourite meal at your favourite restaurant only this time the chef just slapped down all the items on your plate…it just doesn’t look appetising anymore.

As an artist, Photoshop is needed to bring back those emotions you felt at the time.

Take care.
